It’s not something that's gotten a lot of mainstream awareness, but this coming week is Transgender Awareness Week, and it's a time both for celebrating the beautiful, powerful, and resilient trans community and for marking the solemn occasion that is Transgender Day of Remembrance, November 20, when all transgender individuals and their supporters remember the trans lives lost to hate and the progress society still has to make on trans rights.
But it's more than that: This week’s a time for trans people and their allies to take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.
