HARTFORD, Conn. – Citing a poll released earlier this month by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Hartford Courant reports that "as the prevalence of Internet obsession grows, it is turning up more and more as a factor in divorce cases."
James Hennenhoefer, president of the academy, told the Courant that the Internet is a factor in "certainly well over half of the [divorce] cases" he sees, with nearly three-quarters of those cases involving cybersex, infidelity or pornography. And, of course, where there's sex, there's usually money. Hennenhoefer noted that the remaining 25 percent of his cases involving the Internet involves financial matters.
Christine M. Whitehead, a Hartford divorce lawyer, said that the issue of cybersex comes up frequently in the divorce cases she handles. "I'm hearing from wives about husbands who are really addicted to these sites," she told the Courant. Whitehead noted that men are often nonchalant about viewing online porn and chalk it up to "boys being boys." She told the paper, "Maybe it's [viewing online porn] is the new golf, I don't know."
