Commentary: Twitter Rolls Out 'Super Follows'

Recently Twitter has been launching a few new projects aiming at monetizations features and global business development of the brand.

The microblogging platform is now launching a different feature inspired by platforms like OnlyFans: A “Super Follow” option that will give access to bonus content only available through a paid monthly subscription linked to the influencer/content creator’s Twitter account.

At the end of October, Twitter was launching its first testing phase of Super Follow. This new option was only available for iOS users and people based in the U.S and Canada. A couple of days ago, the notorious social media platform has launched the second phase of its plan and made the option available for all the iOS and Android users from their test group.

With “Super Follow," Twitter users will be able to subscribe for either $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99 per month and get access to additional content from their favorite Twitter influencers.

The subscription fee is charged directly from the App Store or Google Play Store and gives back 97% of the cut to the content creators.

Twitter will only charge 3% of the earnings until the “Super Followed” account is making less than $50,000 in a month; after that, the social media platform will take up to 20% of the earnings.

To activate the “Super Follow” option on his/her/it account, the Twitter-influencer needs to count a minimum of 10,000 followers and to tweet at least 25 times within the last 30 days.

This new monetization method offers an extra level of interaction between the followers and their idols. In addition to the regular free content, the “super followers” will be able to enjoy exclusive content and feel part of a premium community, closer to their favorite content creator. To make it even more official and easily visible, Twitter will display a super follower badge next to the fan’s public Twitter handle.

This “Super Follow” feature is not available yet on the web version of the platform but the social media company has clearly stated that it will be launched in a near future.

Twitter didn’t make any specific statement regarding erotic and porn content but it is important to remember that the company is adult-friendly and allows explicit content.

Inspired by the successful performance of OnlyFans and the revolutionary changes in the relations between public figures and their fans, this new tool should open a potentially great new channel to interact with the audience.

Since the fans are already massively using Twitter to communicate with their idols and their community, giving them the ability to enjoy exclusive content is a very coherent and incisive sales argument that should generate interesting benefits for the brands which are already using Twitter to engage with their customers.

Based on our own experience at 7Veils social media marketing agency, we strongly recommend to the brands to create specific content tailored for this new marketing channel. Obviously, fans who are subscribing to an extra (paying) service to get access to exclusive content have high expectations and bet their trust and love in this virtual relationship. A wrong move from the company or performer can affect significantly the e-reputation and therefore, the main sales funnel.
