SugarDVD Now Available on New Ouya Game Console

LOS ANGELES—The motto for SugarDVD must be: Leave no gaming console or streaming service unsugared. Toward that end, the video-on-demand service has made itself available on PS3, Xbox, GoogleTV, Boxee, Roku, the new Xbox One… and now Ouya. Who-ya?

Ouya is a new and interesting console built on the idea that the big boys in the industry are 1) too expensive and 2) don’t have enough new content because games cost too much to make. It went on sale this week, costs $99 and is part of an open-source project in which gamers can try it for free and game developers can decide on their own price.

According to its founder, Julie Uhrman, “The developers have total freedom on how they want to monetize [their] content. So it could be a free demo and then you can unlock the full version of the game for $19.”

Launching with more than 135 games, NPR reports that it “works like Apple's app store. Ouya gets a 30 percent cut and the game maker gets 70 percent.”

Not a bad new home—or home away from home—for SugarDVD. Ouya is available at Game Stop, among other retailers.
