LONDON - Sam Sugar announced on Tuesday that he has put the TGP.com domain up for auction on eBay.
The domain currently hosts a consumer-oriented "babelog" described as a cross between The Superficial and The Hun.
Sugar, who has worked in the adult industry, publishing, advertising, film and television, told AVN Online that the domain has fantastic potential for helping a company reach the webmasters who generate the majority of pay-site profit.
"The key to monetizing the domain is making it a hub for affiliate activities," he said. "Anyone with a megasite can make immediate use of its simplicity, profile and established profile."
Sugar said the domain name perfectly targets adult webmasters, making it an excellent location for a website.
"Everyone who knows about TGPs says, ‘That phrase has no user recognition,' and they're right," he said. "However, if you want to reach adult webmasters with traffic, there's really no better place.
"The major TGPs provide millions of visitors each day, and it's a market people can't afford to dismiss. I think the TGP concept is still viable and will remain so for a long time. I don't think the ‘tube' sites will replace TGPs because not everyone wants to watch video clips. Let's not forget tube sites are what we were calling MGPs, but they simply use better technology."
Though the TGP market has shrunk a bit, Sugar said, it is far from disappearing.
"To quote the old saw, TV did not replace radio," he said. "Besides, the margins on TGPs are higher because the bandwidth is much, much cheaper."
Sugar said he plans to wind down the blog in order to focus on other projects.
"TGP.com has been a passion of mine for a long time," he said, "but unless I can manufacture more hours to put into the day, it's time for it to go to someone who can truly utilize it."
The TGP.com auction on eBay will remain open through 4:36 p.m. PDT on May 7.
