ATLANTA—Award-winning director, adult industry commentator and all-around curmudgeon Mike South has planted his flag in new territory. The often-controversial-but-never-dull daily rants, kudos and brain-benders posted to his flagship website, MikeSouth.com, now are available by subscription formatted for Amazon’s Kindle.
South’s content is the first adult industry material to be made available in Amazon’s Kindle Store. For a monthly fee of $1.99, fans and foes alike can keep up with the latest screeds from South and his herd of inside-the-industry contributors: Julie Meadows, Steve Lick, Lindsey Lovehands and Kayden Kross. Kindle content is delivered automatically via the device’s built-in WiFi connection.
Kindle is a new-age digital distribution channel for e-books and other digital media. Three hardware devices—Kindle, Kindle 2 and Kindle DX—support the proprietary software platform, as does a popular iPhone application called Kindle for iPhone.
Why did South march on Kindle territory?
"I like to look for avenues for promotion of myself and my writers that will bring us new readers," he told AVN.com. "I have been doing MikeSouth.com as an industry blog since around 1999...and I do like to stir the pot. It is important to make people think, I think, and with porn people that's a challenge."
A 16-year veteran of the adult entertainment industry, South holds two AVN Awards for producing and directing. The published author and professional photographer describes himself as “a gun-totin’, Libertarian pornographer.” He is best known for his continuing series of pro-am XXX videos featuring first-time performers, many of whom have gone on to porn stardom. Among South’s discoveries are Midori, Anna Malle, Sana Fey, Melissa Hill and Felicia Fox.
In addition to MikeSouth.com, South also maintains the website SouthernBukkake.com. He doesn't intend to stop his quest for world domination there, though. What's next on the list of potential targets?
"Well, it seems that everyone else is rumored to be buying AVN, so maybe I will look into that," he said with a laugh. "Imagine the horror on porners' faces at the thought of that."
