NAIROBI, Kenya—Kenyan Information and Communication Permanent Secretary Bitange Ndemo said Tuesday that the country will not certify the .XXX top-level domain recently approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, according to a Kenyan news outlet.
Ndemo, who was speaking during the 20th anniversary celebration of World Press Freedom Day, said the decision was made because of Kenya’s relative lack of an internet-savvy population.
"Some countries have that freedom but parents have the responsibility of stopping their children from accessing these sites. Most parents in Kenya are not internet savvy unlike their children so such material would not be controlled," he said, adding, "We are not going to allow .XXX in this country; it's actually a certificate for people to watch pornography.”
Indian officials have previously stated that their country will also attempt to make the top-level domain inaccessible to its citizens.
