MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Enterprising hackers used an interruption in Google's Gmail service Tuesday morning to create a user-generated Google group filled with adult content and links to porn sites.
According to TechCrunch, hackers created the group under the name "Gmail Down" - sending thousands of email-deprived users to the explicit page through high-ranked search results. Google was too busy fixing the problem to notice.
"We're conducting a full review of what went wrong and moving quickly to update our internal systems and procedures accordingly," Google mail product manager Todd Jackson wrote in a blog posting.
Apparently, the loss of Gmail for "as long as four hours" now rates as a worldwide crisis. The explicit content disappeared soon after the situation was resolved.
