BEIJING — Google has been slammed by the Chinese government for continuing to provide access to Internet porn.
According to the state news service Xinhaua, on June 18 the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center (CIIRC) said it "strongly condemned" Google's Chinese portal search engine for links to pornography and "lewd" information that violated national policies.
The CIIRC claimed Google China was still including links to obscene pictures, videos and articles, despite warnings in January and April. The agency said Google "does not filter porn contents from its search results according to China's related laws and regulations."
The government believes Google China "harms the body and mind of minors and go against public morality."
Google has been ordered to clean up its act and remove all links and listings regarding such "lewd" information or face punishment based on Chinese laws.
Since January, China has cracked down on Internet porn, which resulted in thousands of website closures, site blockings and pressure placed on search engines such as Google and the popular Baidu.
Google has not commented on the CIIRC charges.
