CYBERSPACE—Combining right wing demagoguery with a dash of faux outrage, the Daily Caller—which seems to be trying really hard to channel the late Andrew Breitbart's innate sense of political theatrics—is now offering a gun to anyone who can track down the people responsible for putting porn on the site Monday. If the kids want porn on their site, they can damn well put it there themselves! No need to get any help from the anonymous hoi polloi.
The conservative site seems particularly peeved that Google plastered a warning upon entry that the Daily Caller was unsafe. "All of you know that nothing could be further from the truth," they insisted today. "The Daily Caller is a safe site, and always will be." Maybe, maybe not. Anyone with any sense of the realities of cyber security would likely never make such a blanket statement.
At any rate, the incident has spurred the site, which is giving away a gun a week until election day, to action. "This week we are fired up and asking for your help. As you may have seen, our site was hacked recently. There were some extremely inappropriate ads placed on our homepage, and Google therefore had us listed as an 'unsafe site' for much of the day. ... We want to find out who did it and hold them responsible. So for Weeks 11 and 12 we have a joint two-part gun giveaway offer.
"First, if you’re the first person to find our hacker and turn his name over to us, we’ll give you a gun. We realize this may seem like a daunting task, but we believe it can be done. Entering is easy—just answer the questions below regarding your cyber skills."
Entries can be made here. This writer is going for the gun, by the way, and has already filled out the questionnaire. "The FMK 9C1 is an American-made high capacity 9mm designed by Jim Pontillo and manufactured in California. Each gun is engraved with the Bill of Rights."
