UNITED KINGDOM—In what sounds very much like a dog-ate-my-homework story, a conservative MP is red-faced after tweeting a link to a porn site instead of the intended link to a BBC interview with Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith. In Merry Olde England, such an offense can instigate calls for the perp’s head on a pole these days, but the MP, Rob Wilson from Reading East, claims to himself be the victim of an honest-to-God mistake.
“He said Conservative Campaign HQ (CCHQ) sent him a shortened link to make it easier to tweet but it instead linked to the X-rated site,” reported the BBC.
The CCHQ admitted it was in fact to blame. "We apologize to Rob Wilson for our mistake in passing him a shortened link with the last character missing,”said a spokesperson. "This resulted in a quite different website to the one intended being linked from the tweet."
The offending link has since been removed from the Twitter feed, and Wilson, who is parliamentary private secretary to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, has attempted to close the matter by saying, “It has caused me some embarrassment, but CCHQ have issued an apology which I accept and, as far as I'm concerned, that's the end of the matter."
But why was the last character missing, and by what coincidence was the new cast of characters linked to kink? Is it not even remotely possible, if not a more plausible scenario, that someone sent the wrong link to Wilson, but that a last character never actually went missing?
