While most people wouldn’t describe being at the center of a scandal as a blessing, Kendra Sunderland believes the entire Oregon State University camming controversy has made her the luckiest girl in the world. In October of 2014, Sunderland walked into the university’s main campus library and shot what could be considered the most well-known camming session in history. During the course of the hour-plus cam session on MyFreeCams.com, shot during library operating hours, Sunderland earned approximately $700 for her public cam appearance, all while students walked around oblivious to what was about to become one of the most sensationalized news stories of the year. What Sunderland herself was oblivious to, however, was that one of her members recorded and circulated copies of the camming session to various porn sites (in clear violation of My Free Cams user conduct: chat room rules). Thus, the “Library Girl” persona was born, bringing with it a plethora of negative reactions but also many opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to Sunderland had the incident never occurred.
“It’s had drawbacks,” recounts Sunderland, speaking to AVN about the last nine months of her now post-collegiate life. “I’ve lost friends; I lost my privileges to some things because of the whole public indecency charge. That was probably the biggest setback from it.”
As of this writing, Sunderland still faces an ongoing charge of public indecency in Benton County, Oregon, a serious level misdemeanor charge; if found guilty, she could face a year in jail and a fine of $6,250, according to a report in OregonLive.com. Another possible outcome was being placed on a sex offenders list, which Sunderland was recently told will not happen, even if she’s found guilty. But in regard to her college career, once Oregon State University officials were made aware of the public cam session on its campus, an investigation by Oregon State police was conducted with Sunderland’s full cooperation. Afterwards, university officials barred Sunderland from attended classes at Oregon State University.
“I’m not allowed on the actual campus grounds, [and] I don’t plan on ever going back,” says Sunderland who also understands the severity of the case being brought before her. “At first I didn’t really think anything of it and then I started to realize how serious of a charge it is. Every time I went to court ... I was so nervous. I thought I could get thrown in jail or that they would be too harsh. I’m still worried about it because it’s still ongoing and I haven’t been given an actual decision. [Yet] one of the most amazing things for me is how many people are willing to help and support me. There are just so many wonderful people out there who are so supportive.”
In the meantime Sunderland has had time to pursue other opportunities that have come her way, which she describes as just “pure, dumb luck.” She’s recently wrapped up a bunch of feature dancing gigs and met fans at Exxxotica Chicago and Exxxotica Dallas, with Exxxotica New Jersey next. “I feel lucky that I get to go because not a whole lot of cam girls get to go to Exxxotica.”
Among the more unique opportunities that have come Sunderland’s way (unique for a cam girl), is a deal with Pipedream Toys that included having her genitals molded for a pair of Kendra Sunderland strokers. “One is called My Eager Beaver; the other one is called Cutie Bootie. And then there’s a blow-up love doll. So there’s only three out right now. I have a ton of ideas that I want to share with them. It’s just a matter of me getting down to the office and actually talking with them. One is integrating toys with webcamming. I’m kind of hoping that I’ll be able to do something like that, and make my own line for camming as well. So hopefully soon I will be able to announce there will be more.”
With little time for camming these days, Sunderland hopes to make time to fit it back into her schedule now that she has found a new home with PlayWithMe.com, which operates Sunderland’s PlayWithKendra.com site. (For more information, click here.)
Sunderland’s tip goals on cam could skyrocket now that she can add being a May 2015 Penthouse Pet to the list of her many newfound opportunities. As with every other Pet, one goal she has her mind set on is being named Pet of the Year. “It would be a dream come true,” admits Sunderland. “I don’t think I’ll be able to wrap my head around it if I did win. That would be so awesome. It’s such a great title to have I’d be honored but I’m not going to keep my hopes up because there’s 11 other girls that could be it.”
No matter what other opportunities lay ahead, Sunderland still considers herself a cam girl, a job she feels she was meant to do. “I always wanted to be on cam and I always wanted to push myself. It’s sort of addicting. You just love the way it makes you feel and the positive feedback you get is something you love to hear. Some girls can get really addicted to it. People go to work every day and hate their work but they just don’t have a choice. This is what I love to do. This is what I was meant to do.”
Even with all the publicity surrounding her, Sunderland insists she’s still the same girl she was before she cammed in her college library. “People say that I’m famous but I’m not famous. To me I’m the same girl. I haven’t changed; just my life has changed. I’m still the same girl and I still treat people the same way. It was my video that got out and there are plenty of other girls that do other public shows, even library shows. So all I can say is that it was pure luck. I’ve felt like the luckiest girl in the world ever since then.”
