Al Bawaba Slideshow Looks at Porn in the Middle East

LOS ANGELES—A slideshow by albawaba.com takes a rather rare look at porn use in the Middle East. Somewhat sensationally, the site promises, "This is an exposé of the underground pornographic scene proliferating the Arab world. From gay ‘silver daddies’ popular in Libya to what kind of porn-play Persians get up to on religious holidays, we give you the tidbits tantalizing Arabs and Muslims in the privacy of their own homes. Yallah! The Arab anaconda don’t want some unless you got Wi-fi hun! Brace yourselves for some hard home truths about the porn habits relieving users from regional tensions!"

Okay, then.

There are actually only ten slides in the show, but any insight into porn adoption in countries whose media are generally cut off from the rest of the world is of interest. Data points include the ranking of different countries in Google searches for the word "sex," with Pakistan coming in a strong first; the percentage of people from "Muslim majority Arab countries" visiting Israeli porn sites; the prevalence of bestiality in Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan and Morocco; and the busiest day in Iran for visiting porn sites.

Of course, it should come as no surprise to anyone that porn is popular in these countries, despite (or more likely because of) their religious conservatism. It's certainly no surprise to albawaba.com, which giddily reports on "what’s happening between those Egyptian cotton sheets where the action is intensely internet."
