LOS ANGELES - The Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection will unveil its new, voluntary free website label during Webmaster Access West from Nov. 8-11 at the Universal Sheraton in Hollywood, Calif. ASACP Executive Director Joan Irvine during the State of the Industry panel on Nov. 10 will discuss self-labeling by adult websites. Earlier this year at several conventions and trade shows, ASACP held workshops and gathered information to get webmaster feedback.
Aggressive legislative proposals forced the organization to accelerate its timetable, said Irvine. “There are several bills pending that could require adult websites to label. Mandatory labeling of all adult sites has plenty of support in Congress,” she said. “Acting now could help head off new regulations. Remember: nobody knows how a government-devised labeling system would work—or how it might affect your business.”
According to Irvine, voluntary self-labeling by adult websites will demonstrate the adult industry’s proactive commitment to helping parents prevent children from viewing adult content, and the upcoming trade show provides the right audience to market this approach.
“Webmaster Access is the perfect setting for us to make this announcement,” Irvine said. “The new label is the result of many months of collaboration with adult companies and attorneys, as well as with companies outside the industry that provide filtering software, search engines, and browsers. We’re excited about unveiling the label. We really think it will accomplish something important.”
