OAKLAND, Calif.—Nenna Joiner, owner of the sex positive store Feelmore 510 in Oakland, has announced a write-in campaign for Congress.
After being certified with 42 votes by Alameda County Registrar’s office, Joiner is a candidate for the 13th Congressional District (Bay Area) using the name “Feelmore.”
“Write in means the name doesn’t show up on the ballot, therefore, it takes more effort to get people out to vote besides remembering your name,” Joiner said.
Joiner is hoping for strong community support for the campaign, with the hopes of gaining a spot in the general election in November. While many people traditionally opt to not vote in mid-term elections, Joiner is aware it is an uphill battle.
“Using ‘Feelmore’ as my ballot write-in name was an easy decision, and I think some people will take it as cheap advertising,” Joiner said. “However, I am not seeking to degrade the process but make it easier for all to vote for me using an alias as a write-in. Feelmore just so happens to be the name of my business which is a sex shop. I plan to use Feelmore the same way that Harvey Milk used his camera store. That is my goal.”
The Feelmore business owner has been a resource and a partner for good in the community for quite some time, and Joiner notes the fight to open Feelmore in the first place is a reason to cast a write-in vote—it shows they were able to take an idea and move it into fruition.
“America has changed, so should politics. A change of guard is needed,” Joined said.
Joiner is a 25-yer resident of Oakland, a Peralta Community College Graduate; and former employee of many East Bay companies.
