SEATTLE—June 2014 marks Kheper Games Inc.’s 20th anniversary in business. But that’s not the only milestone to be reached by the company, which specializes in games and novelties for adults. Coincidentally, Kheper Games is also about to sell its 20 millionth game. Kheper will be offering customers a 20th anniversary sale on the 20 products that the company credits as the strongest drivers in reaching that 20 millionth sale. Kheper is calling it the 20 – 20 – 20 sale.
Kheper Games started in 1994 as Kheper Publishing with just one product: a book of drinking games.
Founder Brian L. Pellham explained, “I tried first to have my first book published, A Partier’s Guide to 51 Drinking Games, after I finished writing it a few months later. Every path I followed led to a rejection letter and I finally decided if this book was going to get published, I was going to do it myself. I wish I had saved my rejection letters to write back after we sold our half-millionth copy.”
For the first five years after starting Kheper, Pellham continued to work his “day jobs” as a technical writer at Microsoft, AT & T Wireless, and Boeing. “All the while,” Pellham said, he was “writing more games and publishing three more games books. Two of which I co-authored with a good friend, Allison Kent. In 1999, I got my ‘big break’ when Spencer Gifts tested two of our games books and rolled out A Partier’s Guide to 51 Drinking Games.”
In 2000, Pellham pulled in a handful of investors, including his brother (Tony Pellham, who later became operations V.P.), and launched Kheper Games Inc. “I started launching romance games, drinking games, and other adult party games. Many were instant successes that still are best-sellers for us today.” These include What the F*ck?, a drinking games of outrageous questions; Beer!, a strategy drinking card game; Sex!, a card game of sex positions; and Weed!, a strategic game of growing pot plants. All of those have all sold well, Pellham explained. “We’ve since then launched product lines to extend each brand.”
Today, Pellham said, Kheper’s products can be found in adult boutiques internationally, as well as Spencer Gifts, Urban Outfitters, Francesca Collections and Go! Games Stores. Kheper distributes in more than 100 countries, and products are in up to 12 languages (the most prevalent being English, German, Spanish and French).
