NEW DELHI—Sextech startup Sangya Project has received seed funding from India’s leading online adult store, IMBesharam, to manufacture sex toys and pleasure products in India for the first time. Sangya Project is the only brand with the capability to manufacture sex toys in India and will be manufacturing the Sangya S6 Strap On, the S6 Dildo, the Omega Series of butt plugs, and more.
With plans to elevate their manufacturing capabilities and expand the sextech industry in India, IMBesharam’s investment in Sangya Project will turn its dream of "Made in India" vibrators and toys into a reality. The collaboration will also involve making sexual wellness more affordable across the country. Additionally, the collaboration will push for greater accessibility of sex education and sexual awareness beyond India's metro areas by developing digital sextech for Indians.
Commenting on the investment, Raj Armani, co-Founder and COO of IMBesharam said, “We have been espousing 'Made in India' pleasure products since 2020. When Sangya Project took the lead in setting up India’s first pleasure products manufacturing unit, we saw it as a right fit to be associated with them.” He further added, “The market size of pleasure products in India is upwards of $1.6 billion and is growing at a CAGR of over 26 percent. However, more than 90 percent of this potential has not been capitalized due to various factors. Ease of availability, access, and visibility pan India and the high cost of imported products had been an impediment, but now with pleasure products manufactured in India, Sangya Project will be the game-changing catalyst.”
Founded by a queer and poly family in 2020, Sangya Project began its journey as a digital platform for educational content and personal stories around sex, sexuality, relationships, cyber safety, and mental health, and soon ventured into the pleasure industry. Speaking about the funding, Shweta Sangtani, co-founder and chief business officer of Sangya Project stated, “Though the Indian market has immense potential for pleasure products, there has been no manufacturing facility of pleasure products in the country. India has been importing pleasure products, of which the retail costs continue to increase. Another aspect of the imported pleasure products is that they are not made for Indian bodies. Based on the feedback we received from our customers, we decided that it would be more appropriate if these products were made in India, for Indians.”
According to IMBesharam statistics, while Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Pune are the top cities using pleasure products, the fastest growing markets are Chandigarh, Cochin, Goa, Bhopal, and Surat. As per data collated from the website and other players in the market, 54 percent of women purchase pleasure products compared to 46 percent of men.
