MADISON, Wis. - A group of students at the University of Wisconsin Law School have called the school's cancellation of a "Sex Toys 101" seminar a possible First Amendment violation.
The seminar, scheduled for April 23, was organized to promote safe alternatives to sex, educate students about sexual health and pleasure, and discuss laws concerning sex toys. However, the program was axed by school officials.
Members of the Wisconsin Law Students for Reproductive Justice, which planned the event, reportedly have submitted a complaint to Dean Ken Davis, requesting a formal apology, refund of event expenses, and clarification of rules for events by student organizations.
The school's associate dean said the event was canceled for content-neutral reasons, pointing to a Student Organization Office policy that prohibits the promotion or sale of commercial products by a private company.
Organizers called the cancellation "pretextual" and said other law-student organizations have brought in speakers from private companies without having their events canceled.
