Tristan Taormino Opens Up About New Book

SAN FRANCISCO - Cleis Press has released Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships by best-selling author, Village Voice columnist, and Vivid-Ed director Tristan Taormino.

The book gives practical advice on how to create responsible, fulfilling, non-monogamous relationships.

Taormino told AVN Novelty Business the book is for anyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, who is interested in open relationships.

"It has useful information for someone considering an open relationship, as well as tools and strategies for people who are already in open relationships," she said. "Monogamy, marriage, and cheating are among the most talked-about issues in society today. When I began this book, I was interested to find out how people in non-monogamous relationships make those relationships work-how they design their relationships, what issues they face, and what makes them tick."

For Opening Up, Taormino interviewed 126 people from all backgrounds and walks of life, including several from the adult industry.

"Their stories are woven throughout the book," she noted. "[It's] really a guidebook for anyone interested in exploring a non-traditional relationship that falls outside of monogamy."

Opening Up offers strategies for making an open relationship work, including tips on communication, negotiation, jealousy, boundary setting, and conflict resolution.

"Taormino's book comes at a time when non-monogamous relationships are gaining more cultural attention," Cleis Press said. "Just in the past year, [talk-show host] Oprah [Winfrey], ABC News, Newsweek, and [the] Huffington Post have covered open relationships. An Oprah.com survey revealed that 21 percent of 14,000 respondents were in an open relationship. Academic studies in the past 25 years suggest that non-monogamous relationships occur more than commonly thought."

Taormino currently is in the middle of an Astroglide-sponsored tour promoting her book.
