WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.—Newspaper and magazine headlines continue to track the trend of adult entertainment crossing over into the mainstream realm, but Dawn Tulman is really breaking through. The owner of ToiBocks Inc., a company that designs dual-purpose products that provide discreet storage options for adult pleasure products, has been nominated by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal as an Outstanding Woman in Business.
Only 140 women have been nominated for the award, and Tulman said her nomination came from a Business Journal reporter who interviewed her at the 2008 AVN Novelty Expo.
“We were just coming onto the scene at ANE last year,” Tulman told AVN. “AVN really supported us from the start, when (Publisher) Tony Lovett saw the Original ToiBocks and saw the potential. That’s part of why we are so excited to return to ANE and exhibit this year. I truly believe had we not been recognized by AVN, we would not have received an honor like this.”
In addition to the Business Journal nomination, she is also nominated for an “O” Award: The Original ToiBocks is nominated in the Outstanding Innovation category.
Tulman said she was notified of her mainstream nomination about three weeks ago, and the winners will be announced at an awards luncheon on Wednesday, July 15.
“Other nominees work for companies like Walt Disney, Rocketdyne … and then there’s ToiBocks in there,” Tulman said. “It’s such a trip. It goes to show, that if you are in the adult industry but have a product that can cross over into the mainstream, you have just as much of a chance as anybody.”
