Sex-Shop Veteran Retires

READING, England -After 35 years, Lovecare owner Jeremy Bayley is moving toward the next venture in his life: retirement.

Bayley, 58, has handed the keys to his Oxford Road store to new owners.

Highlights of Bayley's career include a visit from Elton John, who stockpiled rubber dolls for a gig at Lovecare in the 1970s, and the 1984 passage of the Video Recordings Act, which restricted the sale of pornographic material to licensed sex shops.

"I've enjoyed a lot of good trade over the years, mainly from local people who are regulars at the shop," Bayley said. "But I'm getting on now, and it's time for a younger, fresher pair of hands to take over."

Bayley said one of the highlights of his career was enabling restriction of adult movies to licensed sex shops, which made trading much easier and made it illegal to sell any type of movie without a certificate.
