Salt Lake Spencer’s Faces Complaints

SALT LAKE CITY – A Spencer's Gifts location was forced to change its displays when, police acting on customer complaints seized the store's adult-oriented merchandise.

Early this year, officers who had obtained a search warrant removed novelties from the store, which is located in the Layton Hills Mall. Shoppers had reported that Spencer's wares violated community standards. Among the merchandise purportedly stocked in plain view were sex-related games, toys, and candies.

Law enforcement threatened prosecution if Spencer's did not remove the items in question, accusing the store of selling materials harmful to minors and creating indecent public displays. However, Bill McGuire, the Davis County district attorney, told the Salt Lake Tribune that Spencer's will amend its merchandising to conform to the area's standards. In a release, prosecutors said, "Spencer's Gifts desires to remain a solid and legitimate business partner in our community, and the parties will proceed on that understanding."

Spencer's managers did not comment to the Tribune.
