Recession Not Affecting Lingerie Sales

LONDON—Despite consumers’ reluctance to spend money on many other “luxury” items, shoppers are still shelling out bucks for undergarments.

According to a report from TNS Worldpanel Fashion, which tracks the lingerie industry, sales of underwire bras increased 10 percent in the first half of 2009, and the sales of women’s and men’s briefs have also increased in that same time period.

“Although cheaper multi-pack briefs are still selling well, we’re seeing more women buying single pack briefs now—with 64 percent of women buying bras this year also buying a single pair of briefs,” Elaine Giles, client manager for TNS Worldpanel Fashion, told reporters.

And while men’s underwear have seen increased sales, the biggest areas of growth have been in loungewear and other comfort items. Men’s pajamas have increased by more than 30 percent, and jogging pants have increased 15 percent, the report stated.

“Like women, men are spending more time in the home during the recession and are adjusting their purchasing habits to reflect this,” Giles said.
