Philips Electronics Moving into Adult Novelty Market with Intimate Massagers

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Philips electronics has ventured into the adult novelty world as they have released their Warm Intimate Massager and Dual Intimate Massager as part of their Relationship Care line. The massager's are ergonomic-shaped vibrators that fit in the palm of the hand and designed for the sexual well-being of couples between the ages of 35 and 55. Each has multiple settings, vibration modes, and feature pre-warming functions.

In development for over two years, the everyday manufacturer of household items are launching the foreplay massagers throughout British stores, the pharmacy chain Boots, Selfridges of London, as well as the Amazon.co.uk web site.

"We were looking for products that wouldn't replace one or the other partner. With more targeted products, one partner feels left out," said Sheila Struyck, head of innovation for Philips. "We have an ambitious five-year plan to build this category. We can tap Philips' competence in everything from lighting to sound to create a broad range of opportunities."

The Warm Intimate Massager is watertight, has three stimulation spots, five modes of vibration and encourages the use of any water or silicone-based lubricant. The massager is finished off with a soft-touch top coat. The foreplay-inducing Dual Intimate Massager is packaged with massagers aimed to please both him and her. Both have four modes of vibration and a discreet charge and storage case. The male version is described as specially designed with a "cupped area" and the female vibe allows you to "stimulate her erogenous zones."

Since May, this marks the second time where a consumer-established company has released adult products targeted toward couples. First it was the Johnson & Johnson-released K-Y Yours+Mine, J&J's first lubricant manufactured for couples and backed by a $10 million advertising campaign. And now, it's Philips. On their website, they describe it as, "her-pleasing-him," "him-pleasing-her," and "relax, enjoy and let the journey begin..." eliminating any doubts of the massager's sexually-pleasing capabilities.

"[The] product launch is exciting as Philips enters this new market with a unique offering for consumers' personal well-being," Struyck said. "This is an attractive market opportunity that Philips is in a unique position to pursue. We have the expertise in health and well-being, a strong track record in product design, a deep knowledge of consumer marketing, as well as a brand shown to lend credibility and appeal to this product category by addressing our target market in an accessible way."

The massagers will be sold throughout Europe next year. The retail price is set around $150 and both come packaged with owner manuals in three languages. To view a YouTube video of these massagers, click here.
