Peekay Opens New 'Lovers' Store

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Peekay Inc. has opened a Lovers store at 12021 N.E. 85th St. in Kirkland, consolidating two of its stores in the Kirkland/Rose Hill area.

Peekay will hold a grand-opening celebration on March 7 and 8 at the 4,000-square-foot store, including product giveaways and music by a KISS 106.1 DJ. The all-day events will provide customers an "unforgettable shopping experience," company founder Phyllis Heppenstall said.

"We continue to show that we are the No. 1 retail choice for consumers," she added. "Lovers provides a positive shopping experience where all people have access to products designed to enhance the romance and sensuality in their lives."

Heppenstall and her daughter, Kris Butt, started Peekay in Washington in 1980. Since opening its first retail store in 1981, the company has expanded to include 14 stores in California and 20 stores in Washington. The company has approximately 300 employees.

"We are committed to our employees and our customer base to continue the amazing growth that we see possible in this industry," Heppenstall said. "Despite a poor economy, we're in the business of providing pleasure to customers and just because someone can't afford to go on a cruise this year, doesn't mean they're ready to give up their simple pleasures at home. That's where we come in."

The new store, which is located off the 85th Street exit of Interstate 5, is highly visible from the highway. Heppenstall said finding the right location is key in opening a successful store.

"The name of the game is location, location, location," she told ANB. "It works to our advantage when we can talk directly with the owners of the complexes. We don't want to open stores across the railroad tracks or in the back corner of a strip mall. Customers should never have a reason to feel embarrassed in our stores. I always say, ‘It's easy to find a location. It's just more difficult to find the right location.'"
