TROY, Mo. - The City of Troy has reversed its decision to grant an adult novelty shop a business license.
The owners of Bliss had been approved for a city-issued, mayor-signed license. But a week later, an ordinance prohibiting such businesses prompted the city's aldermen to unanimously vote to revoke the shop's license.
"We did our homework, checked all the ordinances to make sure we were in the clear," said William Sambo, a co-owner of Bliss.
The store sold adult novelties, candles, incense, T-shirts, and hats, Bliss said.
"I guess sometimes you have to do what's right, and that's what we did," said Matt Bass, a Troy alderman.
Sambo said the ordinance prohibits live performances such as those in strip clubs, but not novelty shops. But an alderman said the business license should not have been granted because the ordinance applies to adult shops.
"I know the city is doing what's right, and we just had to take a stand," Bass said.
Bliss' owners said they will consider legal action against the city if their business license is not reinstated.
