Mich. City Defers Action on Sex Shop Zoning

PETOSKEY, Mich. - Members of the Petoskey City Council decided to defer action on proposed zoning rules for sexually oriented businesses on Monday. City council members agreed to have the city legal counsel attend the next meeting on Aug. 18 to answer possible legal questions.

According to the Petoskey News-Review, the city's zoning ordinance currently doesn't address adult-themed businesses, although the proposed additions identify which types of zoning districts can accommodate sexually oriented businesses.

The rules would also prohibit an adult-themed business from operating within 500 feet of a residential area and within 1,000 feet of a place of worship, a public library, a school serving youth ages 17 and younger, or another sexually oriented business.

Discussions for the proposed ordinance first took place during a July 7 meeting and will continue in two weeks.
