KENOSHA, Wis. - Is your man feeling a little blue about the economy these days? Maybe he needs some pink briefs to perk up his mood.
Jockey International, makers of underwear and hosiery, says research shows sales of their colored Y-front briefs have increased an average of 60 percent in the past six months. Baby-pink briefs have seen a 62 percent increase in the past three months.
Other popular colors include baby blue, orange and pistachio green.
According to Jockey, a similar phenomenon occurred in 1935, during the Great Depression. At that time, Jockey claims, purchases of men's boxer shorts with an image of the earth printed on them skyrocketed, while sales of plain white boxers dropped.
Market analysts told The Daily Mail that it's similar to the theory of "lipstick economics," a trend that sees sales of small cosmetic items increase during a recession, indicative of a form of escapism.
"Men may feel out of control during the recession, so they make small choices which may lighten their mood, and one of these is evidently choosing brighter underwear," Ruth Stevens, brand manager at Jockey Underwear, told the newspaper.
