FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Fayetteville police have charged a 27-year-old man with second-degree kidnapping and a bomb hoax following a standoff Monday afternoon at Priscilla's, a Fayetteville adult novelty and lingerie store.
According to Lt. David Sportsman, the incident started when Matthew Alexander Rivera carried what looked like a bomb into the shop, allowed two customers to leave, held a female manager hostage, and told her to call police.
Officers evacuated nearby businesses, and roads surrounding the store were blocked off during the 80-minute standoff. After an unsuccessful demand to speak to the head of the homicide unit, Rivera surrendered peacefully, and no one was injured. Sportsman did not give any information about a motive or why Priscilla's was targeted.
According to police reports, Rivera carried a false bomb made of Play-Doh, batteries, and wire arranged like an explosive along with a bogus gun.
Rivera is being held on $25,000 bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center. Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to contact the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1856.
