Good Vibrations to Host Art Exhibit

SAN FRANCISCO - Good Vibrations will open an exhibition of paintings by Monica Lundy with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at its Polk Street Gallery.

The exhibition's 14 paintings will be displayed and up for sale through April 7.

Lundy's work, which has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, concentrates on exploring the human body. According to her website, Lundy sculpts thick oil paint with palette knives according to how she perceives volume and form, then reconstructs colors and movement of the subject's skin on canvas. Working with a palette knife results in a thick, harsh texture of overlapping paint, which Lundy says, can only be effectively experienced in person.

"People are familiar with how the female body appears physically," she told ANB. "I'm more interested in how the female body is perceived emotionally. Some people experience the effect of the palette knife as a ‘violent' way to render the body.  I think that aspect compliments the beauty within the paintings.  After all, the body is a place of both suffering and beauty."

Lundy has studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and independently with professional artists in both the US and Florence, Italy.

Camilla Lombard, Good Vibrations' events and promotions coordinator, said she discovered Lundy several years ago.

"I am a musician, and [Monica] is an artist, and we have known each other in the ‘six degrees of artists in San Francisco' way for several years," she said. "A few months ago, I came across a postcard for a showing of hers and thought to request her work for the Polk Street Gallery. We are thrilled to be presenting her work!"

The Polk Street Gallery is located at 1620 Polk St. in San Francisco.
