Finnish Supermarkets to Sell Sex Toys

HELSINKI, Finland—In a move believed to be a first for Nordic countries, grocery chain Citymarket will soon be selling sex toys.

Shelves of the store will be stocked with items from RSFU, a Swedish marketer and organization for sexual enlightenment.

According to IceNews.com, RSFU chose to launch such sales in Finland, since citizens there were the most likely of all Nordic people to purchase and experiment with sex toys.

“Supermarkets already serve people’s needs in health and well-being. Therefore it is appropriate to bring products that promote sexual well-being into the selection,” said Tomi Lahtela, a spokesperson for RSFU.

Some groups, however, are not entirely happy about the decision. Finland’s Obudsman for Children Maria Kaisa Aula and the Finnish Consumer Agency have expressed concern that the items might be confuse children, and are asking that they be stocked well out of children’s reach.

“Children should not be unnecessarily confused by these things. Children who haven’t encountered these items before wouldn’t necessarily know about them, or what they’re for. There’s no point in needlessly confusing them, and for that reason it would be good to place them in such a way that children won’t see them,” Aula said.
