TEMECULA, Calif. - An "X-board," a rotating cross, caught the eye of many passers-by of the Exotic or Erotic booth at the Erotica L.A. show this past weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The BDSM prop, like a classic St. Andrew's cross, is just one offering from the faux finishing design studio/designers and builders of custom fantasy rooms.
With her business expanding, Creative Designer Daylene thought it high time to showcase her company at this consumer expo. Daylene told AVN Novelty Business she felt the exposure at ELA was wonderful.
"I talked to the ELA people a few years ago," she said. "Finally, this year it seemed right because business is growing and growing. I got several requests after the show for a portable [X-board]. A few set designers approached me at the show, which is great because I can get photos for my website." She laughed, adding that one set designer said the work he'd give her could "put her kids through college."
Though her client base has grown over the past six years, she doesn't have many photos of her work that she can share.
"I have an upscale clientele [who are] very, very worried about confidentiality," she continued. "I build some very unusual things: adult nurseries, alien abduction rooms. I do tropical bedrooms, Arabian nights rooms. I can tip the scale one way or the other, something soft to something extremely wild. Someone wanted an ice igloo."
Between her expert training in faux finishing and decorative concrete and the discreet, reliable contractors she works with, a customer's wish is her command.
Daylene got her start wallpapering at the age of 14. Indicating how long she's been in this business, she said, "My daughter's 30 now. I've been doing full-blown faux painting for the past six years ... I did my faux training in Las Vegas with Barth White, who did the faux painting in the Bellagio, the Wynn casino, the pillars at Ceasar's Palace."
When Daylene lived "up in Tahoe," she recounted that many locals worked at brothels. Through friends in this line of work, her specialty business got its start when she "did a VIP room for one of them. Then I started decorating and designing things."
Though based in Temecula, Daylene can travel anywhere to get the job done. Her scope is not limited to confidential fantasy rooms; she can bring to life any dream, be it in a private chamber, on a set, or in a retail space.
