LOS ANGELES—The new book from noted sociologist and adult industry expert Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals arrives in stores today. Titled Exposure: A Sociologist Explores Sex, Society, and Adult Entertainment, the book reveals the business and personalities behind the porn industry, while debunking myths and misconceptions surrounding adult entertainment.
“It has been a very exciting and challenging process to make this book a reality and bring focus to an industry that is dynamic and profitable, but often misunderstood,” Dr. Chauntelle said. “The objective behind writing Exposure was to provide a compelling and fresh look at the porn business and help demystify some of the misconceptions and stereotypes that surround pornography.”
Dr. Chauntelle will celebrate the book’s release with a personal appearance from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, at Hustler Hollywood, 8920 W. Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. The event will feature Dr. Chauntelle reading excerpts from her book, published by Greenleaf Book Group. A Q&A session and book signing will follow the reading, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.
In the book’s foreword, noted adult industry executive Theresa Flynt wrote, “In Exposure, Chauntelle offers fascinating insight into the adult industry’s inner workings, from film sets to business operations. She offers readers the chance to explore a mysterious world through her eyes—the eyes of an informed, sex-positive, empowered woman.
“But as interesting as her accounts are,” continues the Flynt’s foreword, “I found myself drawn even more to the plight she has endured in order to be taken seriously by another peer group: researchers and academics.”
Academics, media, and adult industry members have joined in praise and support of Exposure in recent months. “For anyone with a passing interest in porn—and let's be honest, we all have more than a passing interest in porn—this book is a must-read,” said EJ Dickson, former Lifestyle Editor of The Daily Dot and Mic.com contributor.
Ronald Weitzer, PhD, George Washington University called the book’s view of the adult industry “unique and fresh,” while UNLV’s Kathryn Hausbeck Korgan, Ph.D., author of The State of Sex, said the book will give readers a “better understanding of an often misunderstood industry and a fresh perspective [of porn].”
Brian Alexander, author of America Unzipped: The Search for Sex and Satisfaction, wrote, “Dr. Chauntelle has never failed to impress me with her insight and honesty about [the adult industry].” Corinne Reczek, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Departments of Sociology and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, hailed Exposure’s accessibility, calling the book a “sociologically sound study of the porn industry.”
“If you want to speak from understanding and not parrot media portrayals of porn, read this book!” said Nina Hartley, award-winning adult entertainment actress and author of Nina Hartley's Guide to Total Sex, whose testimonial is featured in the book’s front cover.
Exposure is a first-hand narrative with a no-holds-barred testimonial challenging existing stereotypes about sex and adult entertainment from the perspective of one of its foremost experts. She recounts humorous personal tales at her first adult industry trade convention, reflects on being an AVN Awards judge, and discusses her struggles as a scholar interested in learning more about adult entertainment.
Dedicated to evaluating and understanding the world’s diversifying roles of gender, sexuality, and sex work, as well as unbiased studies of the functioning of the social world, Chauntelle Tibbals, Ph.D., is one of the premier experts on adult entertainment and its effects on society. From writing riveting columns examining the value of porn as art on Uproxx.com, to debunking myths surrounding men adult film stars on MensHealth.com, and writing about porn star “bromances” on Playboy.com, Dr. Chauntelle works to enhance understanding of unconventional communities in the general public.
