LINCOLN, Neb. - If adult retailer "Doctor John" Halton wants to become a city councilman, he will need to rely on write-in votes to get him in office, a judge ruled.
Lancaster County district judge Robert Otte issued his decision after Haltom, 41, and his attorney argued last week that the owner of Doctor John's stores should have his name on the ballot. Haltom filed paperwork earlier this year to run for an open council seat, but the Board of Elections said he could not seek office because of a 200 felony conviction.
Haltom was convicted for selling an adult film to a 17-year-old girl during a police sting in Salt Lake City, Utah. He appealed the ruling to Otte, who declined to order the Board of Elections to reprint ballots with Haltom's name on them, and wrote in his ruling that Haltom's arguments were without merit, the JournalStar.com reported.
