Credit Crisis Boosts Pulse-Quickening Purchases

DERBYSHIRE, England – Finally, good news for the retail sector: Shoppers are spending more on home entertainment as the worldwide financial crunch limits disposable income. Manager Alex Nussey of Derbyshire's Pulse and Cocktail Sex Shop reports a distinct uptick in cash register receipts in recent weeks. The reason? "For less than the average price of a night out," she says, "couples can get a handful of goodies that will give them evenings of endless passion and fun."

Of course, novelty shops aren't the only form of home-based entertainment doing brisk business. The city's HMV, which sells CDs and DVDs, has also seen an increased number of shoppers seeking economical forms of leisure. Still, it's heartening news—and a savvy marketing strategy—for the sex shop industry. "Other stores seem to be suffering," says Nussey. "But we're doing better."
