Clooney Character Boosts Sex Toy Sales

Thanks to George Clooney's character in the film, Burn After Reading, The Silky dildo by Vibratex is receiving an increase in sales.

AdultShopping.com owner Dave Levine features the product on his site. "We have seen an increase in sales for The Silky dildo since the movie's release," he explained. "It is a higher quality dildo, but I think people are coming to the site and expecting it to cost more than $58 since Clooney said it was expensive. So that may be what is boosting sales for that item."

The comedy, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, surpassed its competition as it became the number one box office hit when it opened last weekend, raking in $19.1 million.

George Clooney playing a sex addict in the movie may influence mainstream America to rethink its opinions about adult products, noted Levine. When George runs off to have sex, he makes sure not to forget his Liberator Ramp. His character has an obsession with building his own sex chair, and he specifically points out the chair's "Silky" dildo because "those things are great but are expensive."

Levine added The Silky dildo and Liberator Ramp items to the front page of AdultShopping.com when he heard that the products were to be featured in a hot movie starring Clooney. "Since adult products are often not allowed to advertise to mainstream audiences and are usually kept out of pop culture, small mentions of adult products in mainstream media can have an outsized effect on sales," he said. "Not only will the items specifically used in the movie sell, but this movie should positively influence the sale of adult products in general."

Other mainstream media moments that assisted in the promotion of sex toys include the "Sex in the City" episode that featured a vibrating rabbit; and HBO's "Real Sex" episode about glass dildos. Burn After Reading is not only bringing laughs to movie goers, but is also helping bring more adult products to the mainstream.
