BERLIN - Bruno Gmünder, a publisher of photo books, comics, and erotic calendars, released three hardbound books this month.
The publisher has released the photo books Gods of Sport (featuring the photography of Pedro Virgil) and All About the Boys (with photographs by Michael Andrew), and Boy Meets Hero, a 120-page, full-color book of comic-book art by Chayne Avery and Russel Garcia.
The largest of the May releases from Bruno Gmünder is Gods of Sport, an "imposing collection of 224 pages in highest-quality printing with a lavish dust cover," according to Public Relations Manager Helmuth Täuber.
"[Virgil] and his subjects are not ones to be humble," he said. "Virgil's athletes proudly show what they've got. Whether he sets the scene in a boiler room with a fog machine or under the spotlights of the pitch, the systematic staging of his imagery creates an artificial world for the viewer. In the end, it's nothing more-or less-than a gorgeous illusion."
The photos in Gods of Sport were taken for a fundraising calendar being sold to support the Tim McGrath Foundation.
All About the Boys is a 96-page, full-color book featuring the photography of Andrew, who has been living in Germany since 1996. Only unknown models are featured on the book's large-format pages.
"Michael's most prominent characteristic is the naturalness of the models and his intuition for a quiet erotic mood," Täuber explained. "The lads show themselves both playful and tender in moving solo portraits and erotic encounters. All About the Boys is a sensitively thought-out book full of erotic energy."
Boy Meets Hero features comic-book art by Avery and Garcia, who live together in Albuquerque, N.M., and had worked on the book since 2005.
"Readers can expect a colorful spectacle imaginatively strewn with countless references to world-famous comic heroes," Täuber said. "Ironic digs at gay clichés and heterosexual heroic fantasies round off this work, making Boy Meets Hero a very special treat."
