SURREY, England - British sex shop chain Ann Summers pulled a variety of chocolate novelties from its shelves after they were found to contain poisonous levels of the chemical melamine. The products, including a nipple spread and a flavored body pen, had more than 100 times the amount allowed by the U.K.'s Food Standards Agency.
Manufactured in China by Le Bang, the chocolate items are the latest in a string of melamine-tainted exports. European officials have instituted strict testing of all Chinese food imports. Even so, said the FSA, "We've never had to put out an alert before on willy spread, chocolate-flavored or otherwise."
A spokesperson for Ann Summers noted that the products were pulled as a precautionary measure prior to the FSA's intervention, saying, "As a responsible retailer we have tested all of our chocolates, and even before the FSA alert was issued had taken all relevant steps to remove the chocolate willy spread product that could be affected by this issue."
