Adult Store Thieves Busted After 3-Month Spree

HOUSTON – Two thieves who targeted as many as 23 businesses here-primarily adult-themed stores-were arrested last week approximately one day after their final alleged burglary.

Suspects Jeffery Dawayne Busby and Andrew Lee Bruner reportedly absconded with customers' cell phones and wallets, and, according to police, snatched merchandise from store racks as they made their escapes.

The investigations have been stymied, authorities believe, by victims who may not want to reveal that they were patronizing retailers who sell adult movies and racy lingerie. It's that same shy mindset that investigators think made the stores attractive targets for the criminals-many customers prefer cash over credit cards for sexually oriented purchases.

Other businesses targeted during the three-month spree include smoke shops and convenience stores. The suspects did little to evade surveillance cameras and, in some instances, even posed as shoppers and asking a clerk for help at one point.

"They were very methodical, slow, methodical, looked around for safes to hide money," Lt. Spencer Coker told the Houston Chronicle. "They weren't typical hijackers hitting stores."
