20 Questions: POW Products

Rebecca Powley is president of the manufacturing company POW Products Inc., makers of Tickle Her Pink orgasm creams and G-Spot Gel. The head office is based in Ontario, Canada, with U.S. fulfillment in Chicago, Ill. POW Products began and continues with the manufacturing of natural breast-enlargement products.

Currently, POW Products' lines are distributed by more than 30 major distributors and can be found in almost any adult store, home party, and online. Rebecca can be reached at [email protected].

When was Pow Products created?

Pow Products began manufacturing products for women in 2001.

What inspired its creation?
The need for fun, non-embarrassing, effective products for women.

What products does Pow offer?
We manufacture clitoral gels; tightening gels; delicious, edible, nipple gels; and our unique G-spot gel. We launched in January at the Vegas show with our Ultimate Orgasm Kits, which teams up our different stimulating gels with fun toys and guidebooks. We also recently have introduced a very sexy line of USA temporary tattoos with many different styles, including the much-demanded pastie tattoos.

What's your most popular item?

Our most popular product to date has been the Ooooh! That's It! G-spot Gel, due to its uniqueness, and the Find it Guide.

Who conceived and wrote the Find it Guide?
I was responsible for that. How can you sell a stimulation gel for the G-Spot when so many women and men have no idea where it is and how to bring it to orgasm with a penis or vibrator? The Guide gives confidence to the buyer that they finally are going to understand what all the fuss is about. Our new Like a Virgin Kit (with BenWas) also has a tightening guide!

What is your favorite product?
The Ooooh! That's It G-Spot Gel, because it is the first stimulation gel ever on the market for the G-spot-it's my baby.

Where are your products available for purchase?
Because we are distributed by more than 35 distributors throughout the world, our products are available in pretty much any adult novelty store, at home parties, and on most adult novelty websites.

Who is your target audience?
Originally, it was targeted at upper-class women who wanted a little "extra" in their sex life and did not want to be embarrassed by packaging that clearly is designed by men. However, a large percentage of our customers are men who want both to give a fun and sexy gift to their lover, and also to reap the benefits of our Guide and our orgasm gels.

How many employees do you have?
At present, we have eight employees. But, because of the new Tickle Her line, our company will be expanding.

Who designs your products?
We use a very talented design agency from Toronto.

Is packaging important?
Absolutely. The look of the product is just as important as how the product works.

You offer a variety of product combination packages. Do these combos outsell the individually packaged products?
It currently is too soon to tell, as the various Tickle Her Orgasm Kits have only been out since the beginning of January; but, as sales increase, we do expect it to exceed solo products.

What sets POW apart from the competition?

We always strive to be creating new and unique products like we have done with the Ooooh! That's It! G-spot gel and the Tickle Her Orgasm Kits. We carefully listen to the needs of women and often have "Pajama Party Think Tanks" with home-party consultants!

Who in the industry do you admire?
There are several fellow manufacturers that have been so kind and helpful to us throughout the years-people like Tony from Big Teeze Toys, for example, always gives me trade information and constantly introduces me to his distributors that he thinks would love our products. In a competitive business, that is pretty impressive.

Do you have a favorite product from another manufacturer?
I absolutely love the Sugar Lips collection from Erotic Cosmetics.

Why do you enjoy working in the adult novelty industry?
The greatest satisfaction is when I get to hear in person how well our products work, whether it is coming from one of our biggest distributors or directly from the consumer.

Is there anything you would like to see change within the industry?
Yes, trade shows. Attendees need to be much more qualified before being allowed to enter a business-to-business arena. Too much time is wasted talking to people who are not even in the business!

Was this something you pictured yourself doing?
Definitely not. I graduated from an advertising/marketing program and had planned to work in an ad agency. However, creating products for my own company certainly has turned out to be much more rewarding!

What do your friends and family think of your career?
When I gave up a secure job at an intellectual property firm to pursue my own company, my parents were concerned I would regret it. Now, they think it is wonderful that I have my own company and are proud of my accomplishments. All my friends ever want are samples, samples, and more samples. As for my in-laws, they think that I sell for Avon!

What's on the horizon for Pow products?
We already are working on the creation of more exciting products for 2007 and are looking to expand distribution into South America, Australia, and more of Europe.
