It’s Super Bowl time again, this year in Miami, and as pretty much everyone who's been following the news for years must know by now, despite the fact that virtually NO sex trafficking goes on during that time period, nonetheless, hundreds of sex workers in Miami will be arrested, simply for engaging in consensual sex with clients.
But this year, the Woodhull Freedom Foundation is partnering with SWOP Behind Bars and the LGBTQ Freedom Fund to fight back, by raising bail for as many arrested sex workers as they can.
Bail bonds will run in amounts ranging from $200 to $500 for a "soliciting prostitution" offense. SWOP Behind Bars will be posting bonds after sex workers make their first appearance in court, many times after which they are released on their own recognizance. The Community Support Line will be open 24 hours and will be staffed with volunteers who are prepared to get as many people released as possible.
According to Woodhull President/CEO Ricci Levy, if everyone who reads this were to donate just $25, this ad hoc consortium would be able to bail out 175 sex workers.
Supporters of sex workers are asked to chip in anywhere from $5 up to $100 or more to the bailout fund. Donations can be made by clicking here.
