Police Share New Details Surrounding Jay Hefner's Murder

LINCOLN, Neb.—The Lincoln Police Department has shared several new details about its investigation into the shooting death early Sunday morning of adult performer Jay Hefner.

A 2023 AVN Award winner, Hefner was 24 years old and is survived by friends and family, including a 10-month-old child, a terminally ill mother, and siblings. He was said to have been shot while protecting his cousin in a fight outside a bar during a weekend visit with family in Lincoln.

According to local CBS affiliate KOLN, LPD assistant chief Jason Stille revealed at a Monday press conference that "the main aggressor was assaulting people and fights broke out, and the scene resulted in gunfire."

Stille went on to note that while police do not yet know why the fights started or how many shots were fired, they believe the shooting was targeted and intentional, and they do have a suspect.

Currently, the LPD is fielding support from the public for information that could result in an official indictment and conviction.

"The Criminal Investigations Unit has been working around the clock on this investigation since the shooting, interviewing witnesses, reviewing video evidence, and building a suspect description," the LPD said in a Monday press release

While the police have not yet named the suspect in the shooting, they did give this description: "Black male, 5'7" tall, approximately 25 years old, wearing a white ski mask, blue hooded sweatshirt, and black jeans."

The release also noted that the LPD is investigating this shooting alongside another that occurred in Lincoln over this past weekend.

"First, we want to send our condolences to the families of the victims of this weekend’s incidents," the release said. "Any shooting in the City of Lincoln is unacceptable and when someone succumbs to their injuries, our hearts go out to their loved ones and our attention focuses on holding those responsible accountable."

LPD's duty command can be reached at (402) 441-6000 or anonymous tips can be submitted to the Crime Stoppers program by calling (402) 475-3600.

A GoFundMe fundraiser for Hefner's family has raised over $28,000 to help pay for funeral expenses.
