LOS ANGELES—Noted sex educator, activist, humanitarian and Wicked Pictures contract star Jessica Drake recently returned as a guest speaker to a class of UCLA students, followed by a Q&A. The event, which took place on Zoom, followed a week of lectures and readings about porn’s impact on culture, and gave Drake the opportunity to further discuss the topic in a shame-free environment.
Prior to Drake’s appearance as guest speaker, the students learned about the many facets of pornography’s impact on society. They also examined references in both academic journals and media that were both for and against porn to formulate their own opinion, which they then used to write a short essay employing academic sources.
“Coming into the Q&A portion of my guest appearance, students had already formulated a lot of very interesting and educated opinions on the industry based on what they had read and watched,” said Drake. “Few students have the privilege to arrive in higher learning with a foundation of consensual, shame-free sex education. Following Professor Frederick’s week of lecturing on arguments for and against pornography as a part of his human sexuality course, it was rewarding to be able to add a wealth of context and comprehension for his students. Each time I have spoken at universities, it’s always such a different experience. Not only do the attendees learn from me, I certainly learn from them as well.”
The guest appearance was one of many for Drake, who is often invited to present in Professor Frederick’s Human Sexuality classes at UCLA and Chapman University. While the free-flowing interactive experience is difficult to replicate virtually, Frederick, along with moderators, were able to field live questions from the students pertinent to the material they previously received and relevant to Drake’s introduction and lecture segment.
“Jessica’s guest lecture is an important part of my human sexuality course. From my lectures, students learn what correlational and experimental studies say about how people use pornography and the effects of pornography. Jessica provides them with an insider’s perspective and how someone in the industry thinks about the relationship between pornography and feminism,” said Professor David Frederick. “She also brings needed attention to important topics in sexual health. She discusses how to negotiate consent with a partner, promotes behaviors that enhance sexual health and protections against STIs, and how to maintain a positive sex life. She is a very engaging and interactive presenter, answering any questions students have for her. Year after year, students unanimously say that her presentation was very informative and that I should invite her back so that future classes can benefit from hearing her perspectives.”
