ESPLERP Hosting Sex Worker Rally During California Dem Convention

SAN FRANCISCO—The Erotic Service Provider Legal Education and Research Project will host a rally outside the 2019 California Democratic Party State Convention, which coincides with International Whore’s Day on June 1.

When the convention comes to the Moscone Center San Francisco, sex workers will be on hand to greet the attendees, including the 2020 Democratic Presidential candidates, and advocating that a new “Decriminalize Sex Work” resolution be added to the state Democratic Party platform. Nearly 50 state delegates have already endorsed the Resolution.

“We are demanding that the Democratic Party, and presidential candidates like Kamala Harris, make the decriminalization of sex work a priority!” says Kristen Di Angelio of Sex Worker Outreach Project of Sacramento. “The criminalization of prostitution, including the criminalization of clients, creates exploitive and unsafe work conditions which disproportionately  target people of color, LGBT, homeless youth and victims of sex trafficking.”

Many of the 2020 Presidential candidates, including all Senators and Representatives, supported FOSTA, a 2018 law that made sex work more difficult and dangerous.

“As the national momentum grows for inclusion of our voices, decriminalization is within our grasp,” Maxine Doogan of ESPLERP said. “We will let the candidates know that we expect them to Repeal FOSTA. We will not be silenced.”

The Democratic Decriminalization Rally takes place noon to 3 p.m. June 1 at the Moscone Center North-North/West Corner of third and Howard, 747 Howard St., San Francscio. For more, contact Doogan at (415) 265-3302 or [email protected].
