BEIJING — Communist Party of China publicity official Liu Yunshan announced in a national news conference that more emphasis needs to be placed on banishing piracy, illegal publications and online pornography, according to the Xinhua news service.
Last year, China confiscated about 149 million pornographic, pirated and unauthorized publications, clamped down on 44,000 illegal stalls and 933 print shops, and closed 62,600 illegal websites.
"Unswerving efforts should be made to protect intellectual property rights and to fight various illegal publications so as to maintain a sound cultural environment," Liu said in the conference.
In the past year, officials have investigated over 31,000 cases involving the production, sale and distribution of illegal publications, as reported by China's National Office for Cleaning Up Pornography and Fighting Illegal Publications. Of those, 667 were criminal cases.
The purpose of the crackdown, Liu said, is to protect the health of young people and strengthen copyright enforcement.
