WASHINGTON – Conservative senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) will drop out of the 2008 presidential campaign, citing trouble with raising money as the main reason, sources close to him told the Associated Press.
According to the report, Brownback is expected to officially announce his withdrawal in Topeka, Kan.
A supporter of Christian fundamentalism, Brownback has had strong policies on obscenity, sponsoring several bills and amendments such as a general government appropriation bill in July, in hopes of giving the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) back the power to enforce hefty fines over what it considers profane, and the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2005.
According to the AP, the senator is still widely expected to seek the Kansas governor's office when his second term expires in 2010.
