TRENTON, N.J. - The New Jersey State Assembly is considering a pair of bills which would crack down on sexually oriented businesses located near schools and residential areas.
Reporter Scott Goldstein of the Trenton Bureau writes that "the first bill (A-3692) would authorize municipalities to adopt ordinances for regulating and licensing adult businesses. The second measure (A-3693) would impose tougher zoning laws and notification requirements on sexually oriented businesses."
Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden) proposed the bills in response to a businessman's plans to convert a vacant building in a residential area of Cherry Hill into a store selling adult videos and sex toys.
"Sexually oriented businesses may have First Amendment rights, but that doesn't give them carte blanche to exploit children or erode the property values of nearby homeowners," Lampitt told the Bureau. "We need to provide property owners and communities with all possible tools to keep porn shops and other adult-oriented businesses in check."
