Klein Puts Porn Opponents in Perspective

LAS VEGAS - Sex therapist and blog author Dr. Marty Klein delivered a thoughtful treatise on the so-called "war on porn" during Wednesday's keynote speech. Making his case that the government, conservative Christians, mainstream media, and even the therapy profession, among others, have created a "sexual disaster industry (SDI)," Klein demonstrated that the war on porn has branded sexuality as a public health problem, thereby giving the government the right to remove civil rights in order to "protect the public" from the supposed threats of sex and the private consumption of pornography.

"The SDI has overstated the amount of sexual violence and sexual danger in America and created the illusion of a threatening sexual 'other,'" Klein stated. "It's worse than a conspiracy; it's a war."

Klein went on to claim that the sexual disaster industry has intimidated people by creating several "artificial problems" such as "the gay problem," "the immorality issue," "the anti-Christian agenda," and "the promiscuity problem."

"The SDI terrorizes people, mobilizing them to defeat these threats," Klein said, adding that such tactics have created a sort of "internalized erotophobia" in which people seek to repress the sexual impulses they fear they may have, while those in positions of power have used public policy to address their own private insecurities and anxieties surrounding sexuality. This, Klein concluded, has led to the current war on porn.

Stating that the sexual disaster industry "portrays a world with no legitimized consumer for non-approved sexual practices," Klein made a sobering case that the adult entertainment industry likely will remain under attack for quite some time.
