Illinois County Tries to Block Adult Businesses

GENEVA, Ill. – Kane County development officials are attempting to amend its zoning map to prohibit any prospective adult-oriented businesses from locating within its limits. The only area in the county zoned for adult businesses — which lies within the town of Geneva’s planning jurisdiction — was previously occupied by Thumpers Gentlemen's Club, which closed earlier this year.

Kane County officials are now working to keep any future adult businesses off of the unincorporated site.

“This is an area that Geneva is growing into,” Phil Bus, executive director of the Kane County Development Department, told the Chicago Tribune. “The [former Thumpers] building doesn't have a whole lot of value as it currently exists.”

The site — which has been vacant for the last six months and is now up for sale — has housed various adult-oriented businesses for the last 60 years.

Phil Page, Geneva's city administrator, told the Tribune that the site is incompatible with nearby neighborhoods of single-family homes and businesses and out of step with the city's vision for development of that area.
