LOS ANGELES - The federal copyright and piracy suit brought by Evil Angel Productions against Canada-based Kaytel Video Distribution is projected to come to a verdict next Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Having commenced trial last Thurs., July 26, the case has seen Evil Angel owner John Stagliano and former Evil Empire affiliate Jules Jordan — whose videos were among the most extensively pillaged by the alleged perpetrators — attend hearings daily since Thursday. Stagliano has testified during that time, according to his wife and company p.r. chief Karen Stagliano.
"The trial was originally scheduled for ten days, and it was extended to two weeks," Karen told AVN. "Due to the current trial litigation, we feel it is better not to comment, but we will be sure to fill AVN in after the trial ends."
EA's suit has stretched out for nearly two years, originally filed in Sept. 2005, and alleges numerous federal and state infractions by Kaytel, including copyright and trademark infringement, and the knowing manufacture and distribution of counterfeit Evil Angel DVDs.
Other charges leveled include mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and causes of action under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Damages sought are in the millions of dollars. Representatives from Kaytel have maintained that all accusations are unfounded.
Evil Angel is being represented by Allan Gelbard, and arguing on Jules Jordan's behalf is Sean Macias. Presiding over the trial is U.S. District Court Judge James Otero.
AVN will report the results of the trial when they become available.
